Operating Room Technician
Duties and responsibilities:
The operating room technicians are also called
surgical technicians or surgical technologists. They are responsible for having
the surgical instruments, sterile bandages and linens, needed fluids, and some
other equipment ready for the operation. They may have assist doctors for they
can hand them the instrument they need during the surgery and for counting the
sponges and needles before and after the operation. They deliver specimens to
hospital laboratories for analysis and right after the operations they start
taking the patients to the recovery room.
Average salary:
$16,000 - $22,000
Educational Requirements:
A high school diploma or GED certificate is
required. Many junior colleges offer programs in operating room technology, and
training may also be taken at a large hospitals. The programs vary between one
or two years. A few students receive training in medical terminology,
physiology, and sterilization methods. The students should take an examination
by the Association of Surgical Technologist at the end of class.
